Day 6: Being, Not Doing

Oh, the mighty to-do list. We fill it with chores, goals, and reminders. Tasks for the day. Reminders for the week. Goals for the year. It’s a neverending game of checking off and adding on. A game that never seems to let up steam, leaving us exhausted by its mere existence.

In all of that doing, we rarely set time for BEING.

Focusing our efforts on any given activity creates results, but sometimes we accomplish more when we release.

Take crossword puzzles for example. When you sit down to do a new crossword puzzle, your mind focuses on finding all the possible answers. You hit the easy ones, then work really hard to figure out the ones that intersect those answers. You sip your coffee, scratch away at your folded newspaper (I’m old-fashioned!) and see how far you can get at that first pass. When you hit the wall—and can’t possibly figure out any more clues—you put it down.

That’s when your crossword brain starts to work its magic.

In letting go of the effort of doing the crossword, your brain is processing the information without you putting any attention on it whatsoever. While you are busy with life, a part of your mind is noodling 18A and 36D. When you do finally pick up your crossword puzzle a few days later—BOOM—you fill in more answers.

When you release the effort, your being takes over—allowing your mind, body, and spirit to work as one to help you discover answers you didn’t think you knew. When you let go, you come back refreshed and ready to discover things from a new perspective.

In other words, when you’re relaxed—not forcing, not straining, just being—you’re more likely to have brilliant ideas and figure out how to make your wish come true. A brilliant title for your next essay. A brilliant name for your new product. A brilliant idea on how to raise funds for your next family vacation. Bam! These gems pop into your mind when you’re allowing yourself to just…be.

WITNESS: Could you take some time today to stop doing-doing-doing and just…be? Take a hot shower, take a two-minute meditation break, or take a moment to sit outside and do absolutely nothing at all. Just be. Notice what happens. You might feel calmer. You might feel more grounded. Your brain might even surprise you with an “a ha!” moment—a solution to a problem you’ve been wrestling with for weeks.
